Plasmodium ovale--a case report from Gujarat.

چکیده
The geographical distribution of the four human malaria parasite species–Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae and P. ovale is variable and is dependent on a number of factors such as season, endemicity and vector distribution. P. vivax is the most widely distributed and the most common species observed in temperate regions of the world, while P. falciparum is the most widespread throughout the world’s tropics. Records of P. ovale infection are scanty in all geographical areas of the malaria-endemic world, with the exception of tropical Africa. P. ovale is seldom seen except in sub-Saharan Africa and on some islands of the western Pacific.

A Case of Plasmodium ovale Malaria Imported from West Africa
Malaria is a parasitic infection caused by Plasmodium species. Most of the imported malaria in Korea are due to Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum, and Plasmodium ovale infections are very rare. Here, we report a case of a 24-year-old American woman who acquired P. ovale while staying in Ghana, West Africa for 5 months in 2010. The patient was diagnosed with P. ovale malaria based on a ...
متن کاملA Case of Imported Plasmodium ovale malaria
There have been reports in Korea of imported malaria cases of four Plasmodium species, but there has been no report of imported Plasmodium ovale malaria confirmed by molecular biological methods. We report an imported case of that was confirmed by Wright-Giemsa-stained peripheral blood smear and nested polymerase chain reaction targeting the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene. The amplified DNA w...
متن کاملClinical Pharmacology of the Antimalarial Chloroquine in Children and Their Mothers
Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium knowlesi are the parasites that infect humans. Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax cause most of the malarial infections worldwide. Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium knowlesi are susceptible to chloroquine. Chloroquine was the world's most widely used antim...
متن کاملFailure of atovaquone/proguanil to prevent Plasmodium ovale malaria in traveler returning from Cameroon.
We report a case of a patient returning from Cameroon who developed Plasmodium ovale malaria, despite atovaquone/proguanil (AP, Malarone) prophylaxis, which is widely used for the prevention of chloroquine-resistant malaria. AP is indeed active only on schizont blood forms of P. ovale but not against liver-stage hypnozoites and does not realize effective prophylaxis against delayed onset of P. ...
